cSPACE’s first Showcase Event of 2023 is looking to warm your heart

In October 2022 the cSPACE arts hub in Marda Loop hosted its first showcase event since February 2020. The lockdowns of the global COVID-19 pandemic meant that for two years we were unable to showcase the incredible talent and imagination bubbling away in our creative hub.

So when the opportunity came up to restart our quarterly Showcase series, we went big. Inspired by Hallowe’en, the Haunted School theme permeated the old King Edward School (now the cSPACE creative hub in Marda Loop). Throngs of visitors were tricked and treated to a building full of amazing costumes, volunteers getting into the spirit handing out candy, fancy smoky cocktails, live music, robot dancers, ghost stories, tarot readings, tricksy photo booths, potion making workshops and more.

And now we’re getting ready to do it all again!

On February 9th, join us for a Palentine’s Celebration Showcase event. From 5pm-9pm enjoy free activities, open studios, exhibitions, and a lot more. What is Palentine’s, you say? It’s an opportunity to celebrate all forms of love. Romantic, yes, but also filial and compassionate, heart-warming varieties.

Featuring —

  • Cash bar with themed signature cocktails, wine and beer
  • Love potion station
  • Quickie love tarot readings
  • Live music from Calgary jazz favourites, The Redline Trio, as well as lovely locals, Honeydrifters
  • Open studio events from Atelier Artista, Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society, and Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (free magazines!)
  • Silent auction with delicious treats and concert tickets from local businesses and performing arts groups
  • Art on display from the students of Maria Montessori
  • Kid friendly activities from the Alliance Française
  • Candy, chocolate, and more candy

For those less attracted to the traditional hearts and flowers of Valentine’s Day, book tickets to Wine, Words, and Wolves from the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society. They will be launching a new anthology, Terrace V: Penitent’s Gold, and celebrating Lupercalia! This pagan Roman fertility festival is thought to be the origin behind today’s Valentine’s Day, but with much more blood and goat sacrifice 🙂

CASA Mexico will also be hosting an open house to celebrate their new studio space here at cSPACE in Marda Loop. Expect Latin bands and maybe even an acclaimed opera singer to add to the romantic mood.

In other words, be there or be a heart-shaped void in our feels.
